SMRT and Bombardier Sign a Long-Term Train Service Support Contract

SMRT Trains (SMRT), Singapore’s leading rail operator, and Bombardier Transportation (BT), global mobility solution provider, have signed a 10-year service support contract for servicing BOMBARDIER MOVIA trains running in the North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL) of Singapore’s metro system.

SMRT manages and operates train services on the North-South Line, the East-West Line, the Circle Line, the Thomson-East Coast Line, and the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit. MOVIA Metro Trains are designed and manufactured by Bombardier Transportation. These trains use an innovative propulsion system and state-of-the-art wireless technology. Bombardier customises the train structure based on the needs of train operators. These trains are used in the NSEWL lines. As part of the 10-year contract between SMRT and Bombardier, BT will provide spares and parts for carrying out the maintenance works of the MOVIA trains. BT will work with SMRT to monitor the train operations and develop solutions to prevent train glitches before they happen.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is providing support to SMRT and Bombardier Land Transport Authority as part of this contract. The 10-year contract will commence in 2022, which may be extended for another 20 years. Previously, in March 2018, SMRT had signed a 10-year contract with Bombardier for the maintenance of 32 BOMBARDIER INNOVIA APM metro cars as well as for providing spares parts support.

LTA has awarded Bombardier Transportation a S$337•8 million contract in which BT will have to supply 40 six-car trainsets in batches from 2024 for the NSEWL system.

Regarding the SMRT and Bombardier partnership for train maintenance, Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung said, “This arrangement will help keep train maintenance costs low and allow us to tap on experts from around the world to keep our trains safe and reliable.”

Apart from the train service contract, SMRT is also working on providing value and better community services in the NSEWL Lines. Mr. NeoKian Hong, Group Chief Executive Officer commented on this by stating, “We have embarked on Communities in SMRT (CIS), a concept where we transform our stations into inclusive community spaces as we rejuvenate them on the North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL) with the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The idea is to add value to the community through better design integration of stations with the surroundings, creating spaces for community services and bringing the community together through events at our MRT stations.”

SMRT has always worked hard to establish a high set of operations and maintenance standards to increase retail reliability and safety. Mr. Seah Moon Ming, SMRT Chairman stated regarding this, “We have launched the Railway System Technical Committee to formulate standards to raise the reliability, safety, and productivity of railway systems.” He further commented, “The committee will raise the profile of Singapore’s rail engineering and contribute to the global rail industry in a meaningful way.”

Conclusion

Adopting advanced technologies and carrying out regular maintenance works of metro trains help to improve their lifespan and increase reliability. The partnership between SMRT and BT will enhance Singapore’s rail performance and provide safe and comfortable journeys to commuters.
