Singapore’s SMRT Corporation Ltd Appoints New CISO

Modern transportation networks have hundreds or thousands of processors managing every aspect of train operators and feeding vital information back to command and control centres. Transport operators in Singapore spend hundreds of millions of dollars, or perhaps billions, on making transit more reliable and safer while improving the customer experience. That’s why cyber security has become a crucial part of the daily narrative of transport operators. Transport operators are now focusing on hiring Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to design and implement a safer model for transit systems. Singapore’s multi-modal transport operator, SMRT Corporation Ltd, recently appointed a new CISO.

Chief Information Security Officers (CISO) are on the front lines of defending transit organisations from criminal actors and cyber attacks that would take advantage of any gap in the transit defences. SMRT Corporation has named Shao Fei Huang as its new CISO. Mr. Shao Fei has previously worked as the Chief Information Security Officer at Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) where he super headed the cyber security programme across land transport.

 

Who is Shao Fei Huang?

Mr. Shao Fei Huang has a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Tokyo. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Leicester. He is certified in CITPM and CISSP-ISSMP.

 

Currently, he has been appointed as SMRT’s new CISO. Reporting to SMRT’s chief digital transformation officer, Mr. Tan Peng Kuan, Mr. Huang has a wealth of experience in the field of cyber security. Mr. Huang has worked as a principal security architect with Amazon Web Services. He has been a longtime IT executive with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), where he held roles including CISO, director of cyber security, and director of data science, among others.

 

Huang is also a fellow of the Singapore Computer Society (SCS).

 

In March 2022, SMRT Corporation announced that it is appointing Mr. Ngien Hoon Ping as its Group CEO with effect from 1 August 2022. Mr. Ngien Hoon Ping is also an ex-IT executive of LTA. He served as the Chief Executive of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) from 2016 to 2020. Mr. Ngien and his team laid the foundation for a significant improvement in rail reliability & safety and led the delivery of infrastructure projects such as the Thomson-East Coast Line, Mandai Depot, and the new Lornie Highway. 

 

Commenting on the appointment of the new SMRT CEO, Seah Moon Ming, SMRT Chairman, said: “We welcome Mr. Ngien Hoon Pin to the SMRT family and are confident that with his experience in the transport sector as well as his more recent focus on digitalization and process improvements.”

 

Seah Moon Ming further added: “My fellow directors and I look forward to working with Mr. Hoon Ping, who is our new SMRT CEO, to pursue operational & business excellence and grow SMRT sustainably.” 

 

Conclusion

As SMRT’s chief information security officer, Mr. Shao Fei Huang will be enforcing and strengthening the extensive cyber security systems that have been in place in SMRT. He will elevate cyber security and align it more closely with the company’s business strategy.
