11 MRT stations along the Thomson-East Coast Line are on track to open by end of 2022

The Thomson–East Coast Line (TEL) is a medium-capacity Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore. When completed, the line will serve 32 stations over 43 kilometres in length. The line is currently being opened in 5 stages, with Stage 1 (from Woodlands North to Woodlands South) opening on 31 January 2020. Stage 2 of the Thomson-East Coast Line (from Spring leaf to Caldecott) opened on 28 August 2021. Now, Stage 3 is expected to begin operations from Caldecott to Gardens by the Bay in Q4 2022. Recently, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that it handed over the 11 stations to SMRT Corporation, a leading multi-modal transport operator.

Stage 3 of the Thomson-East Coast Line

SMRT and LTA have been testing the integrated systems and trains for TEL stage 1 to 3 since the start of the year. LTA said that it completed the testing of TEL3's signalling systems, and SMRT will conduct further tests to ensure all systems are ready for service by year-end.

Over the next few months, SMRT will carry out further tests, to ensure that all systems are operationally ready for service by the end of this year,” said Transport Minister S. Iswaran.

About the Thomson-East Coast Line

The Thomson-East Coast Line is Singapore's sixth and newest rail line. The entire TEL comprises 32 stations with eight interchange stations. Once the TEL line is fully completed, more than 240,000 households will be within a 10-minute walk from a TEL station.

SMRT Trains awarded the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) contract to operate and maintain the line in stages from 2019 for an initial nine-year period.

With Stage 2 of TEL already operational, commuters travelling from Springleaf to Great World Citysave more than 40 percent in travel time compared to a 60-minute journey by bus and train.

Now, SMRT and LTA are preparing Stage 3 of TEL. All the systems used for 11 stations of TEL stage 3 have been rigorously tested by LTA to ensure they do not affect the safety and operations of existing MRT systems. SMRT will conduct further testing before 11 TEL stations open to the public in Q4 of 2022.

The last two stages of the TEL, Stage 4 and Stage 5, comprising a total of 10 stations from Founder's Memorial to Sungei Bedok, are expected to open around 2024 and 2025.

The Singapore terminus of the RTS Link is directly connected to the Woodlands North station of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), operated by STEL Pte Ltd, another SMRT group company for seamless and convenient transfer to the domestic MRT network.

Commenting on the opening of Stage 3 of TEL, both Seah Moon Ming, SMRT Chairman and Ngien Hoon Ping, SMRT CEO, said: “We are also working closely with LTA and system suppliers to prepare for a smooth opening of Stage 3 of the new Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).”

Ngien Hoon Ping further added: “We are grateful to all commuters, MOT, LTA, Temasek Holdings, Unions, and other stakeholders for their continued trust, confidence, and unwavering support. We will continue to deliver safe, reliable, and commuter-centred services in a sustainable manner, so that we can move people and enhance lives.”

Conclusion

The Thomson-East Coast Line is the latest addition to the MRT network in Singapore. When it is fully operational, TEL will help relieve crowding on the East-West and North-South Lines. As all civil and structural works, as well as systems integration and testing activities for the third stage of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), have been completed, SMRT is expected to open Stage 3 to the public in Q4 2022.
