Six more MRT stations will be built in Phase 2 of the Cross Island Line

 Singapore’s extensive road-rail-bus network, currently serves over seven million commuters each day. This comprehensive land transport network and infrastructure continue to grow and improve. Recently, the government announced more stations for the Cross Island Line. Six more stations on the Cross Island Line (CRL) will be built and are slated to open in 2032.

New MRT stations in Phase 2 of the Cross Island Line 

CRL is Singapore’s eighth MRT line, spanning over 50km, connecting the country’s major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District, and Changi. Spanning 15km, the six new stations will improve connectivity for residents in the west, including areas such as Sunset Way and West Coast that are not currently served by an MRT line.

 

The stations are Turf City, King Albert Park, Maju, Clementi, West Coast, and Jurong Lake District, forming Phase 2 of the Cross Island Line. Two of the stations will be interchanges, with King Albert Park linking to the Downtown Line and Clementi to the East-West Line.

 

Phase 1 of the Cross IslandLine was announced in 2019. Phase 1 comprises 12 stations from Bright Hill in the Sing Ming area to Aviation Park in the east. It stretches through areas such as Ang Mo Kio, Serangoon North, Defu, Tampines North, and Loyang. CRL Phase 2 will shorten travel times for commuters in the west, particularly for those on West Coast.

 

Commenting on the construction of new stations along the CRL, Mr. S Iswaran, Transport Minister, said: “By connecting key commuting corridors across Singapore, the Cross Island Line will also help to redistribute passenger movement across rail lines, thereby improving the overall public transport experience.”

 

Recently, Stage 3 of the new Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) started passenger services in November 2022. SMRT Corporation, a premier transport operator in Singapore, and the Land Transport Authority worked closely together to prepare for a smooth opening of Stage 3 of TEL. SMRT did thorough testing before starting passenger services on this line. Commenting on the same, SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, said: “When we work together, the good we achieve is not just for ourselves now, but also for the generations that come after us.”

 

With the construction of new stations on the CRL, many Singaporeans will benefit from shorter, more direct journeys and faster commutes. A wider and denser rail network will also strengthen resilience.

 

Conclusion

Construction for CRL2 is expected to start next year and the stations are to open by 2032. It is expected to benefit 40,000 households living in those areas.LTA said this will help it achieve its target of having eight in 10 homes within a 10-minute walk to a train station.
