A Spotlight on SMRT’s Role in Ensuring Safety and Security on Singapore’s MRT System

Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system has long been recognised as one of the world’s most efficient and reliable transportation networks. SMRT Corporation, the leading operator of the MRT system, has been a significant contributor to its success. In addition to providing seamless transportation, SMRT prioritises safety and security, implementing a range of measures to safeguard passengers and maintain a secure environment. Let’s explore the crucial role played by SMRT in ensuring the safety and security of Singapore's MRT system.

Advanced Technology Systems:

To monitor and maintain security within the MRT system, SMRT employs state-of-the-art surveillance technologies. The surveillance systems enable real-time monitoring and recording, aiding in the detection of suspicious activities, preventing crime, and enhancing response capabilities during emergencies.

Like SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming mentioned that railways are complex, involving many sub-systems operating in a dynamic environment. Beyond preventive maintenance and timely asset renewal, SMRT will grow Predictive Maintenance capabilities to enhance reliability and operational excellence at affordable costs.

SMRT Chairman further added that through strong partnership, sincere engagement, and efficient planning, the company will continue to renew and re-engineer our railway infrastructure, train systems, and operations to achieve operational and service excellence.

SMRT invested in a rail predictive maintenance solution, also known as the Predictive Decision Support System (PDSS). This system visualises all relevant rail asset information while managing, monitoring, and analysing rail conditions. The PDSS has been successfully implemented on the North-South East-West Line and will be brought to the Circle Line soon.

Another innovation that SMRT implemented recently is the Track Access Management System (TAMS). The system also uses AI to digitalise and automate track access allocation for regular maintenance and planning of engineering works by replacing the previous labour-intensive and time-consuming process.

Robust Infrastructure and Maintenance:

SMRT invests heavily in the MRT infrastructure's maintenance and enhancement. The company follows strict engineering standards and conducts regular inspections to ensure the integrity of tracks, tunnels, stations, and other critical components. This commitment to infrastructure maintenance minimises the risk of accidents and malfunctions, ensuring a safe and reliable commuting experience for passengers.

Emergency Preparedness and Response:

SMRT places significant emphasis on emergency preparedness and response protocols. The corporation conducts regular drills and training sessions for its staff, including station managers, train operators, and maintenance personnel. These exercises simulate various emergency scenarios, enabling employees to familiarise themselves with the necessary procedures and protocols. By maintaining a well-prepared workforce, SMRT can swiftly respond to incidents such as fires, medical emergencies, and natural disasters, ensuring the safety of passengers and staff.

Passenger Safety Initiatives:

SMRT continually strives to enhance passenger safety within the MRT system. The company takes measures such as installing platform screen doors, audible and visual announcements, and clear signage to guide passengers. Safety campaigns and educational materials are also deployed to promote responsible commuting behaviours and raise awareness about potential risks.

Additionally, SMRT collaborates with relevant authorities and agencies to implement crowd management strategies during peak hours and special events, preventing overcrowding and ensuring smooth passenger flow.

Collaborations with the Government and Stakeholders:

SMRT actively collaborates with the Land Transport Authority and law enforcement agencies, such as the Singapore Police Force, to maintain a secure environment. This partnership includes sharing information, conducting joint operations, and implementing security measures in coordination with relevant authorities. These collaborative efforts bolster the overall security infrastructure of the MRT system and foster a safer commuting experience for all passengers.

Conclusion

SMRT's unwavering commitment to safety and security is vital to Singapore's MRT system's success. Through robust infrastructure, advanced surveillance systems, emergency preparedness, passenger safety initiatives, and collaborations with the government, SMRT ensures that commuters can travel with confidence. As Singapore continues to develop and expand its public transportation network, SMRT's dedication to maintaining safety and security remains paramount, setting a benchmark for MRT systems worldwide.
