How Digitalisation Efforts by SMRT Has Reshaped the Way People Commute and Work

The public transportation system in Singapore is the backbone of the country. Digitalisation offers opportunities to shape the future of urban mobility by providing better customer services. Transport operators in Singapore including SMRT Corporation and SBS Transitand the government are working together to develop digital platforms to open up intelligent and easy access to all transport services and mobility products for commuters. As the leading multi-modal transport services provider, SMRT has understood the importance of digitalisation in transportation. It leverages the latest technology to enhance the experience of commuters. Check out below how SMRT is changing the way people commute with its digitalisation initiatives.

• One of the key digitalisation projects of SMRT is the Track Access Management System (TAMS). This system provides real-time updates on track application status and confirmation of track allocation, which boosts operation control and productivity.

• SMRT Corporation has partnered with SWAT Mobility to launch night transportation for Singapore Press Holdings’ workers. The partnership has helped the transport operator to do automated route optimisation.

• It hasbeen working on Beeline and RushOwl for customers to pre-book their seats and monitor bus locations real-time online.

• SMRT has launched the Predictive Decision Support System digitalised platform for better analysis of asset design, maintenance and condition data. This system provides advanced data processing for condition-based maintenance. This has resulted in the reduction of service disruptions and inconveniences for commuters.

• SMRT is utilising new systems and technologies such as condition monitoring sensors, artificial intelligence, as well as data analytics processes. These technologies help the company to anticipate and avert faults on a wider scale.

• SMRT uses artificial intelligence and video analytics to detect suspicious objects that are left behind.

• The operator is conducting trials of On-Demand Public Bus Services in partnership with the Land Transport Authority to evaluate the feasibility of operating public bus services with real-time commuter demands.

These are just some of the digitalisation efforts taken by SMRT so far. It is working on more technology projects to improve its services. Commenting on the digitalisation in the public transport system, SMRT Chairman Seah Moon Ming, said: “SMRT Engineering, our newest Business Group developed to grow our rail engineering expertise, leverages digitalisation and technology to transform the Company, our Services, and continually upgrade the skills of our workforce.”

Seah Moon Ming further added: “We are adopting digitalisation to strengthen collaboration across teams and improve our work processes to raise our operational effectiveness. As we digitalise, we are also taking the opportunity to change our mindsets to meet evolving business demands and customers’ needs.”

Conclusion
The government, LTA, and transport operators are all working together to enhance digital abilities, cybersecurity and data control in the public transportation system. Digitalisation in transportation not only helps to increase efficiency and improve service quality but also opens up new services and systems that change the way commuters travel.
